A letter from Mayor Dean DePiero

April 29, 2009

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Please accept my heartfelt gratitude for going above and beyond in helping to make this year's Parma Safety Fair the most successful in the city's history.  Again, we were blessed with great weather and a good crowd - moms, dads, grandparents and curious individuals who took advantage of our summerlike weather for an unforgettable learning experience.

Your passion and dedication for educating the public about our safety forces in Parma and the region goes a long way in helping folks feel more safe and secure. It also allows them a glimpse of the same dedication that our safety forces use every hour of every day they are on the job.  There is no doubt as to why Parma has a long history of
being a safe and friendly community for people of all ages.

I am grateful to all of you and your staffs for making us Proud of Parma.  All the planning and hard work is well
worth the effort.  Nice job.

Sincerely,

Dean DePiero
Mayor of Parma

From our friend Darlene Davis, from the North Royalton CERT team.  Darlene taught the American Red Cross First Aid Class at the Parma Safety Fair.  She sends us the following information:

I am forwarding a five minute pod cast on the swine flu from the CDC. Please
watch the video and forward it on to other family and friends.  There are predictions                                            that we may be facing a pandemic influenza in the very near future. Fortunately,                                                 the current swine flu strain virus has been responding to several antiviral medications,                                  however, it is extremely important to seek medical attention immediately if you develop                            symptoms of the flu because the antiviral medications are only effective if started within                                      the first 24-48 hours of the onset of symptoms. You can find additional reliable online                                 information on pandemic influenza at www.pandemicflu.gov

Ohio’s Severe Weather Awareness Week is March 22-28

Statewide Tornado Drill is Wednesday, March 25

Columbus, OH – The month of April is right around the corner. And with that, tornado season in Ohio is soon to begin. April through July are the peak months that tornadoes can occur in Ohio. It is important that everyone knows where to go and what to do if they hear the warning sirens sound.

Governor Ted Strickland has proclaimed March 22-28 as this year’s Severe Weather Awareness Week. In a coordinated effort with the governor and the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness, the sate will participate in a statewide tornado drill and test its Emergency Alert System on Wednesday, March 25 at 9:50 a.m. Schools, businesses and households are encouraged to practice their emergency plans and tornado drills during this time.

The best defense when faced with tornado warnings or any severe weather event is preparedness. Know the weather situation. Have a disaster plan. Practice the plan. Make a supply kit. Be prepared.

Saturday, January 31st, Parma CERT with help of representatives of Boy Scout Troop 292 from St. Charles Church assisted the Parma Fire Department with a hydrant clearing exercise.  Over two hundred hydrants were cleared by this group of volunteers.

This was important, because as pointed out by Parma Fire Assistant Chief Dennis Ryan, a fire doubles in size every thirty seconds.  Relieving the Fire Department of having to clear snow, makes their job easier and possibly saves lives and property.

The Parma Hydrant Clearing was the lead story on Channels 3, 8 and 19 six o'clock broadcasts.  Below are the video links to channel 8 and channel nineteen video.  For Channel 19's video, you must look at the list of videos, select more and scroll through the list.  Channel 3's link has not yet been located.  Channel 8's link features CERT Members Eugenia Bednar and Bob Gage; Channel 19's video features CERT members Karen Riegel and Terry Gill.

When tragety's strike,
be they large or small,
they somehow seem,
to effect us all.

The disaster is here,
my community's broken,
the help I can give,
is only a token.

To help out my neighbors,
and help them get through,
I'm a member of CERT,
and that's what i do.

Please look at the CERT Fundraising Opportunities page of the website.  This was something that was recently added.  Anyone who visits parmacert.com, clicks on the AT&T Banner, and then orders AT&T's Uverse product will result in Parma CERT receiving a $75 donation from AT&T under their 'Prefer to Refer' program.

AT&T Uverse is a combination of High definition Television along with high speed internet (10 MBPS) service, combined together at very competitive prices.

Additional opportunities may also appear, that would also result in donations to Parma CERT.

The following is a letter recently received by Dennis Gerlich, from the Co-Chairs of the Parma Relay for Life, Dave Smallwood and Steele Nowlin:

Dear Dennis:

On behalf of the organizing committee for the Parma Relay for Life, we want to convey our sincere thanks to CERT for all of their hard work at Relay this year.  Never a complaint, never a lull in your efforts.  You and your Organization played a very large role in our success.

Because of these efforts we thank you.  More importantly, all the people we have yet to meet, the survivors of cancer thank you.

Our relay, top ten in the State of Ohio, top in the surrounding ten counties, can't succeed without people and organizations like CERT.  You are a true asset to the Community.

All our best,

Dave Smallwood and Steel Nowlin

This past week has been a busy one for Parma CERT.  On Saturday, July 12th, twenty-seven CERT members were trained in a self defense class at the Parma Justice by Officers Norm Kekic and Joe Mazur.  The class concentrated on restraint techniques to be used in an emergency.  The class was orchestrated by new Training Chairman William Kesman.

On Monday evening, July 14th, CERT members Brian Riegel, Eugenia Bednar, Kevin and Cathy Niswonger and Dennis Gerlich attended the monthly meeting of the Joseph J Jacubic Post 572 of the American Legion on State Road.  The purpose of the visit was to accept the donation of an amount to purchase an equipment trailer (see story below) to assist CERT during emergencies.  After the meeting, the group enjoyed the hospitality of the Post at their canteen.  The picture above shows Post 572 Commander Jerry Bucchioni presenting the donation check to CERT Coordinator Brian Riegel.

Tuesday, July 15th brought about a double meeting at the Donna Smallwood Activity Center (DSAC).  First, a new training class of CERT members along with the first ever Business Emergency Response Team (BERT) began with Module 6, CERT Organization.  Twenty-eight trainees took part in the class, with BERT members from Mt. Alverna, Parmadale and Holy Family Cancer Home.

On the other side of the wall divider, the bi-monthly Cuyahoga County Citizens Corp Meeting was chaired by Nick Phillips of North Royalton CERT, with representation from CERT Teams from Shaker Hts., Pepper Pike, Brook Park, West Shore, Quad Cities, Parma, Garfield Hts., North Royalton, the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, Cuyahoga County Emergency Management, the Animal Rescue Team and the American Red Cross.

The week will conclude with Parma CERT working at the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life to be held at Tri C Western Campus on Friday, July 18th and Saturday, July 19th.  Volunteers are still needed.  Please contact Dennis Gerlich at dennigerlich@parmacert.com or his cell phone, 440-610-0592.

Also on Saturday, Parma CERT members will participate in the drill to be held in Garfield Hts., the drill will have to do with distribution of vaccines at a shelter.

To those that did not see the parade nor fireworks yesterday, Parma CERT used both of the events to practice radio skills and help our community.

Dave Ziel, Cathy Niswonger, Kevin Niswonger, John Rader, Holly Nagorney, Bob Mader, Eugenia Bednar, Joyce Kraczewski, Brian Riegel and Dennis Gerlich met at the Donna Smallwood Activity Center at 8 A.M.

Bednar, Mader, Cathy Niswonger, Ziel were appointed team captains and attended a briefing with Brian Riegel at the Justice Center.

After the briefing, team members were assigned duties and responsibility to cover areas of the parade route.  Brian Riegel remained at the area around the Smallwood Activity Center and City Hall to guide the team members.

Later that evening, Nagorney, Riegel and Gerlich were joined by Karen Riegel, William Kesman, Tim and Judi Habert and Betty Lou Dembkowski to cover the grounds at the Fireworks held at Tri C Western Campus.  A fairly uneventful evening provided some additional radio communications practice.  Just prior to the beginning of the fireworks, Fireman Rick Ciarrone requested that a member  (William Kesman) of the CERT Team accompany him back along the line where the fireworks were being ignited, to assist in making sure embers were extinguished.

Due to the number of members who helped at the Donna Smallwood Activity Center, it took only three hours to paint the kitchen and then less than that on the second day to paint the second room.  Just goes to show the strength in numbers.

The shelter at Valley Forge High School closed officially at 4 PM on Friday August 10th.  We would like to thank the CERT Teams from Garfield Hts., Lakewood, North Royalton and Quad Cities for providing additional personnel to assist in staffing the shelter on Friday.  This was the first time in the State of Ohio, that CERT Teams worked together to provide assistance.  While final numbers are not yet available, Parma CERT provided approximately 270 hours of service to assist the American Red Cross at the shelter assisting citizens of Parma who had been displaced due to flooding.

A debriefing of the Shelter incident will take place at the Parma CERT Organizational Committee meeting on Wednesday, August 15th at 7 PM at the Parma Senior Center.

To all of those who assisted, you are to be commended for the way that you handled the situation in a professional manner.  You have done yourself, your cities and your CERT teams proud!

July 31, 2007 CERT Training Class - Fire Safety

Parma Fireman Elliot Rodriguez volunteered his time to train eleven members of the new CERT Training Class on July 31, 2007 with the topic being Fire Safety.

Firefighter Rodriguez taught how to identify and reduce potential fire risks in the home and workplace, how to conduct a basic sizeup for the emergency.

After classroom training, CERT Trainees took turns practicing proper technique with various fire extinguishers on the propane fire pit that is provided by the Parma Fire Department.

The training module was videotaped by the Parma School District's PACT(Parma Area Cable Television) for showing on Cox Communications Local Access Channel.

The City's Fourth of July Parade stretched out over the two mile parade route and went for over two hours.  Nine members of Parma CERT marched in City's Fourth of July Parade passing out eight hundred pieces of literature detailing the coming training and distributing a thousand pieces of candy to children along the parade route.

Later that evening, members of Parma CERT assisted at the fireworks display that was conducted at Cuyahoga Community College on York Road.  CERT members assisted by walking through the crowd and assisting any people attending the fireworks who may need medical attention, getting them to the Parma Fire Department Paramedics who were also in attendance.

It was Saturday, June 16th, 8:30 A.M., a tornado had just touched down in Ward 2 of Parma.  Parma CERT was dispatched, there would be a search and rescue of Parma's Bethany Lutheran Church and School buildings.  There would be victims to locate, triage and treat.

This would be the scenario that Parma CERT Trainees would tackle as their final drill under the ever watchful eye of Captain Ed Sopko and members of the CERT Organizational Committee.

The CERT Group was assembled at the Parma Senior Center where an initial briefing took place with Incident Commander Shelley Cullins, who then passed the necessity of the drill to members waiting to participate.  The CERT members were then dispatched by bus to Bethany Lutheran Church.

Upon arrival at Bethany, the CERT members disembarked from the bus and unloaded their gear to prepare for the drill and setup command and triage areas.

A final briefing was held prior to the drill with Captain Sopko, Cullins and team leaders Mike Maistros, Cathy Niswonger and Dave Ziel.

Ten members of the current CERT class, along with a handful of veteran members tackled the scenario to hone their skills in incident command, search and rescue, radio communications and first aid.

A brief critique of the drill followed discussing ways to improve radio communications, search and rescue techniques followed.

The drill concluded as members of CERT were transported back to the Senior Center, and the drill concluded at 11 A.M.

Pictures from the drill can be seen on the photojournal page.
