Organizational Committee Meeing - February 17, 2009

Communications - Dennis Gerlich

Follow up letters for the Teen CERT Program were mailed to Superintendent Sarah Zatik to advise them where we stand in regard to the program.  A second letter was also mailed to Ms. Zatik, requesting information as to whether or not it would be an issue with the teachers union, to use the lead officer's in each high school as the program facilitator.  Another was sent to State Representative Tim DeGeeter thanking him for his assistance in getting the State Attorney General's grant (approximately $3,000) release to Parma CERT.

Financial - Eugenia Bednar

The bank account was reviewed and the balance was $5,865.  Recent debits against the bank account were for training equipment purchased.  It may be necessary to spend $262, for new radio batteries.  It was decided to request that Cleveland Communications inspect the radios, to make sure there are no issues with them.  Eugenia advised that a recent fundraising committee was held.  In her opinion there may be a budget shortfall this year.  Recent monies in were the State Attorney General's grant and a grant from Wal-Mart.  She also mentioned she had approached Law Director Tim Dobeck and asked him to review the Bylaws and Conflict of Interest Policies of Parma CERT.  It was suggested she may want to talk with Coordinator Brian Riegel and discuss further before proceeding.

Recruitment - Karen Gluntz

Disappointed in the number of people who signed up for training and the actual number of participants.  Will continue to work to draw people for our program.

Training - Dennis Gerlich (for Brian Riegel)

Currently seven people going through the CERT training program.  CPR and AED classes continue through March 7th.  Opening for the CPR classes remain.

Supplemental Training - William Kesman

CERT has lined up two training classes to be held in accordance with the Parma Police Department.  The first will be a self defense class to be held a little later this year.  The second will be a Citizens Police Academy for Parma CERT members to be held in the fall of 2009.

Chamber of Commerce - Kathy Stiokis

The next luncheon is to be held on Thursday, February 26th at Parma High School.  Superintendent Sara Zatik will be guest speaker to do a state of the schools address.

Audit Review Committee - Karen Gluntz, Terry Gill and Dave Ziel

During the audit review the following recommendations were made by the committee, to be implemented for better safeguarding of Parma CERT Checking and Savings accounts.

  • Transactions will be noted in the order that they happen.
  • All transactions(deposits and withdrawals) will be recorded in a check register.
  • Deposit entries will show detail of income(check and cash) and their source.
  • Any cash receipts shall be verified by the Finance Chair and one other Organizational Committee member.
  • A reimbursement form shall be created for every reimbursement request.
  • Receipts will be attached to the accompanying reimbursement request form
  • Checks will be used in ascending order, Voided checks will be noted.
  • Each receipt and check reimbursement form will show the check number issued to track payment.
  • Those individuals responsible for ticket sales or sideboards will note their starting cash position, number of tickets or sideboards sold, total cash and profit.
  • Any transaction that withdraws funds, wither by simple withdrawal or by check will require two (2) signatures.
  • Reimbursements are to be made within thirty (30) days of the expense.
  • Audits will be held quarterly or as otherwise deemed by the Organizational Committee

Upcoming Schedule

CPR / A,ED training through March 7th, 2009

American Red Cross First Aid Training to be held at the Parma Safety Fair on Saturday, April 18th, 11:00 A.M until 3 P.M.

New CERT Class to begin in July.

Old Business

Teen CERT - Cathy Niswonger reiterated the communication with Dr. Zatik of the PCSD.  Also, the application of the grant for the Parma Health Care Foundation to be applied for by March 1st. Other grants being worked upon are Costco and State Farm.

New Business

Picking a company to do trailer decaling is tabled til next month as waiting on two companies for quotes. 

An update was given by Tim Habert in regard to the VNA(Visiting Nurse Association) and the sign up of Senior Citizens on vnareadyseniors.org.  Meeting will be held on Saturday, February 21, 9:30 A.M. at the Donna Smallwood Activity Center(DSAC) with a member of the VNA.  CERT Members to participate are Tim and Judi Habert, Karen Gluntz, Dana Wood, Dave Michl, Kathy Stiokis,Dave Ziel, Nancy Yates and Steve Skapura.  Seniors will be registered during the day on Thursday, March 12th at the Donna Smallwood Activity Center(DSAC).

Relay for Life will be held on July 18th at Cuyahoga Community College Campus.  Parma CERT will once again participate with Relay, anyone interested in working should contact Dennis Gerlich at dennisgerlich@parmacert.com.

CERT has also been contacted about possibly working the NEO Challenger baseball tournament at the State Road Park on July 18, 19 and 20th.  More information to follow.

Organizational Committee Meeting - January 21, 2009

Communications - Dennis Gerlich

Certificates from State Representative Tim DeGeeter, Mayor's Office and Treasurer Anthony Zielinski were received for 2008 CERT Graduates and distributed to those present.  Problems with the website, parmacert.com have been corrected for the most part.  Some accounts still need to be re-added to the website.  Thank you letter to be drafted to State Representative Tim DeGeeter to be drafted by Dennis Gerlich and mailed this week.

Finance - Eugenia Bednar

Tax forms are to be filed by May 15, 2009.  The check for the amount of $3,027 was received from the State Attorney General's office.  A special thank you to Rep. Tim DeGeeter for his assistance in this matter.   Grants currently being worked on are Parma Hospital and Kosco.  Discussion of United Way funding.

Recruiting - Karen Gluntz

Fourteen people are set to begin CERT Training this Saturday, January 24th. 

Training - Brian Riegel

New CERT Training class beginning on January 24th.  CPR / AED training to be held every Saturday in February.  Check the schedule for times for each class.

Chamber of Commerce - Kathy Stiokis

Monthly luncheon to be held tomorrow.  The 2009 Chamber Presidential Ball will be held at St. Michael's Woodside beginning at 6:15 P.M.

Old Business

Teen CERT was discussed, awaiting information on grants.  Utility tools that were purchased for members of the July Class who did not receive them, were passed out to members.  AED teams for equipment maintenance were updated.   The AED's are to be purchased by the City and positioned around the City.  The teams will do monthly maintenance.  Organizational Committee member Dave Ziel was named AED Team Captain.

New Business

Tim Habert has been working with seniors at the Donna Smallwood Activity Center inputing information and helping them get more prepared.  On Saturday, 2/21 there will be training for those wishing to assist the seniors.  The first date scheduled with Joann Mason, Director of the Donna Smallwood Activity Center, to do a wider scale input of information will be done on March 12, 2009 from 10AM until 1PM.  It was decided to get updated quotes for the CERT Equipment Trailer. Dennis Gerlich is to provide them at the February Organizational Committee meeting.

Supplemental Training - William Kesman

Three items are in the works for the future.  A self defense class will be done for Parma CERT by the Parma Police Department.  Also working on a Citizens Police Academy for Parma CERT.  Working with the Northeastern Ohio Fusion Center to provide a talk on the Cyber Society.  At the February Organizational Committee Meeting, The Regional Transit Authority Police will give a talk on Terrorism.  In March, the Cuyahoga County Board of Health will give a presentation on Disaster Preparedness.

County Review

Citizens Corp meeting was held on January 20th in Independence.  Review of the different committees was done.  With new members being added to the Training Committee.  Dennis Gerlich was added to the Community Outreach Committee.  Currently 2,000 to 3,000 CERT members are in Cuyahoga County.  Brigitte Gerard commented that Parma CERT members should attend these meeting to see what is occuring in Cuyahoga County and should be proud of their team.

Organizational Committee Meeting - December 17, 2008

Communications - Dennis Gerlich

The twenty three new graduates of Parma CERT were recognized at the Parma City Council meeting.  The new CERT graduates received proclamations from  Mayor Dean DePiero, Parma City Council, Law Director Tim Dobeck, Treasure Anthony Zielinski and State Representative Tim DeGeeter.  Parma CERT has been working with the Parma Sun Post to have a new column begin.  It will be called the CERT Corner.  It is hoped to begin sometime in Janaury, 2009.

Finance - Genia Bednar

Genia reviewed the checking account information.  Information has been received for the grant for reimbursement from Cuyahoga County.  Still awaiting updated information from Representative DeGeeter's office regarding the Attorney General's grant.  The audit committee will meet to review the financial records sometime in January. 

Recruiting - Karen Gluntz

Eleven people have signed up for the new training class beginning Saturday, January 24th at the Donna Smallwood Activity Center. 

Training - Brian Riegel

New training class will begin on  Saturday, January 24th at 9 A.M..  The CPR / AED Training classes will be in February on all four Saturdays.  Those dates will be February 7th, 14th. 21st and 28th.  Times will vary so check the schedule and sign up for the class that fits your time frams.  The CPR / AED Classes will be open to Parma CERT members, City of Parma employees and anyone living in the City of Parma.

Supplemental Training - William Kesman

Working on having the Northeast Ohio Regional Fusion Center provide a seminar at one of our meetings.  Also working with the Parma Police Department to provide a self defense class, as the one last year was well received and trying to have a Citizens Police Academy for Parma CERT members.

Chamber of Commerce - Kathy Stiokis

Nothing current to report.  The Chamber will host their annual Presidential Ball on Saturday, January 24th at St. Michaels Woodside, located off Wallings Road.  The President-elect, Chuck Germana will be instilled as President. 

County Update

Christmas Party was held on December 10. Nineteen members showed up for festivities at Shula's Steak 2 located on Rockside Road in Independence.

Business Recovery

Chris Doyle of Serv Pro gave a talk to members of Parma CERT that was well received.  In the future she will be doing a demonstration on residential recovery.

Parade Critique

It is hoped that next year, if Parma CERT is involved, we would have input with regard to the Parade Setup for use of the the multiple parking lots.

Old Business

Teen Cert was discussed.  The current drawback is the funding aspect.  The committee is looking at different grants for this purpose.

New Business

VNA - Tim Habert  will be doing the next session at the Donna Smallwood Activity Center on December 23rd from noon until 3 PM. 

Discussion on somehow marking the Trailer Hitch (donated by Bob Gage) to be used with the equipment trailer.

Unit reports for the 2008 CERT Annual Report are due by late December.

Organizational Committee Meeting  - November 19, 2008

The website has been updated.

Finance - Eugenia Bednar

The updated bank statement was reviewed.  Results of the fundraiser were given, although not final as yet.  No response from the State of Ohio regarding the Attorney General's grant.  It was agreed to continue to work thru Representative Tim DeGeeter's office to resolve.  Parma CERT did not receive a grant from the Parma Community General Hospital Foundation.  The AT&T link is on the website, anyone ordering product through it, Parma CERT will receive a donation.

Recruiting - Karen Gluntz

A craft fair will be held on December 18th, 19th and 20th at Parmatown.  May be possible to do recruiting there.  Need to continue to work thru City newsletters as well.

Chamber of Commerce - Kathy Stiokis

Next luncheon meeting to be held on Thursday, November 21st at 11:30 A.M. at Anthonys on Pleasant Valley.  Guest speaker will Michael Koler, Financial Adviser.

Supplemental Training - William Kesman

Nothing to report at this time.

Old Business

Cathy Niswonger complimented the fundraising committee for their hardwork at the recent fundraiser held at Jigsaw Saloon.

Dave Michl gave information on the Pepper Pike Drill held at two schools and the college in Pepper Pike.  It was a school shooter scenario.  Students at the High School were transported to the college, and from the middle school to the elementary school.  The CERT team was not included in drill until about half way through the drill.

New Business

The City of Parma Christmas parade will be held on Saturday, December 6th.  The parade will step off from the Donna Smallwood Activity Center. 

Brian Riegel reviewed information with regard to the Mass Innoculation Committee.  Parma CERT was the beneficiary of a donation of a tent from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health.  He also reported the CERT Member Bob Gage donated a trailer hitch to be used when our equipment trailer is to be pulled.

An audit committee has been formed to review Parma CERT's Financial books.  The group will do an annual review of the finances.  The group will consist of Karen Gluntz, Terry Gill and Dave Michl. 

The guest speaker at the meeting was Sheila Niles of the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA).  She discussed a program funded by the State of Ohio.  The program will be part of the ready..gov website.  It will be under vnareadyseniors.org.  It will be an online survery to assist seniors to prepare for emergencies.  The seniors will answer questions and then be given information on how to best prepare for an emergency.  The questions are simple yes and no questions.

Organizational Committee Meeting - Wednesday October 15th

Communications - Dennis Gerlich

Advised that State Representative Tim DeGeeter's office has been contacted to resolve the grant that the Attorney General's office granted Parma CERT in May, 2008.  Thru Rep. DeGeeter's office, it has been determined that a check should be cut by 10/2/08.

Our website has the AT&T banner posted, so that anyone ordering Uverse through our website, AT&T will make a donation of $80 to Parma CERT.

The mirror hangers for members of Parma CERT are in and will be distributed at all Parma CERT events.  Members are reminded that they are only to be used when Parma CERT has been activated and all parking laws are to be observed.

Finance - Eugenia Bednar

Money from the Ohio Attorney General's Office will reimburse Parma CERT for equipment purchased for the new training class.  

The annual fundraiser is fast approaching, members are needed to help at the fundraiser.  Anyone interested should contact Genia.  Tickets for the fundraiser are available, cost is twenty dollars per person.  This will pay for food, drink and door prizes.

Genia advised that the County Grant will be submitted shortly for reimbursement of CERT expenses from 2007.

Recruiting - Karen Gluntz

Advised beginning to work to recruit members for the January 2009 training class.

Training - Brian Riegel

Advised that the current training class is about to wrap up, and that the final drill will be held on Saturday, November 15th. 

Parma CERT is working with Cuyahoga County Emergency Management to host an ICS 700 class at the Donna Smallwood Activity Center (DSAC).  Waiting on confirmation from the county.

Chamber of Commerce - Kathy Stiokis

Announced the next meeting of the Parma Area Chamber of Commerce will be held on the 23rd of October at the Parma School Employees Credit Union.

A Clambake and reverse raffle will be held at Holy Spirit on West 54th street, on Sunday, October 26th.  Tickets are fifty five dollars.  Contact Cheryl McIntosh at the Chamber office, 440 886-1700.

New News

A Mass Innoculation Clinic meeting was held on October 14th at Parma Fire Station 5.  It was announced that a test will be held on 10/27/08 for pods.  An email is to be sent to all Parma CERT members to determine the total number of Parma CERT membersand their immediate famiies.

ServPro will give a busines disaster presentationon Tuesday, November 25th at the Donna Smallwood Activity Center from 7 PM until 8:30 PM.

A City of Parma project to be headed up by Shelley Cullins, to place AED's in public buildings.  Parma CERT was asked to handle the maintenance of these machines, that would be done during business hours (8AM until 5PM).

A project between the Donna Smallwood Activity Center and Parma CERT will help Parma Seniors develop emergency plans.  Visit the website www.vnareadyseniors.org for more information.

Organizational Committee Meeting - Wednesday June 18th

Recruiting - Karen Gluntz

Discussed the Proud of Parma Tab that had an article regarding Parma CERT that was distributed just prior to the Parma Rib-N-Rock.  The new CERT/BERT Training class, that will begin July 15th will have approximately fifteen to twenty members.  She reviewed that she and Dennis Gerlich spoke at the Parma Area Historical Society on June 17th, the speech was well received among the members of the Historical Society, prompting questions with regard to their own emergency plan and how to get teenagers involved with CERT.  After the meeting they graciously donated $25 to Parma CERT.

Financial - Eugenia Bednar

Eugenia reaffirmed that the Jacubic Post 572 will be donating the funds for the purchase of the Parma CERT Equipment trailer.  The trailer is to be purchased at The Home Depot in Maple Heights and then  decaled at Caruso's on Valley View.  She further advised that she is hoping to have the check within the next two weeks from the Ohio Attorney General's Grant that Parma CERT was approved for.  She has begun working on a budget for the 2009 calendar year.  It was mentioned that we need to select a date for the fundraiser at Progressive Field with the Cleveland Indians in September. 

Communications - Dennis Gerlich

The decaling to be applied to the trailer was discussed, and suggestions to modify it, by adding the Parma Police Department logo as well.  An example of a window hanger was also displayed, that will be produced for use when Parma CERT members would be deployed.  Discussion of the new bylaws, with regard to the change of the name, and mentioned that it should also show a mandatory annual drill, and corrections to other articles.  The bylaw corrections will be done at then presented at the July Organizational meeting.pr  An email from Captain Ed Sopko, regarding the work to be done on the fourth of July.  Parma CERT members will walk along the parade route, and practice communication with the Emergency Operations Center.  Members of all safety forces (Police, Fire, Auxilary Police and CERT) will participate.  Then during the evening, CERT members will walk the campus of TRI C West and continue the same drill while offering assistance to members of the public,  To volunteer please contact Dennis Gerlich.   A thank you letter was received by Parma CERT for painting the Smallwood Activity Center Kitchen and side room. 

Training - William Kesman

William has made contact with The Illuminating Company to have the electrical program put on for a training session for Parma CERT.  Approximately 17 members have expressed interest for the self defense class that will be put on by the Parma Police Department.  The date to be finalized shortly.  He has also discussed an evidence preservation training class with the Police department.  William is also working on a program at the Fire Safety House that would include CERT and members of their families, more to come on this.

Chamber of Commerce - Kathy Stiokis

The Chamber luncheon will be held on Thursday, June 26th and will be the final luncheon prior to the break of summer. The Chamber is also sponsoring a thank you to all who volunteered at the Parma Rib-N-Rock.  It will be held Thursday, June 19th at the Blue Moose on Ridge Rd.

County Meeting - Citizens Corp

The next Cuyahoga County Citizens Corp Meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 15th at the Smallwood Activity Center(formerly the Parma Senior Center) at 7 P.M.

A discussion was led by Cathy Niswonger and Eugenia Bednar in regard to a possible new CERT program for teens.  This came out of a training program, Disaster and Children, that they attended with The Cuyahoga County Board of Health.  Further discussion will be held at a meeting of a committee to possibly facilitate this program on Wednesday July 2nd, the site to be determined.  Anyone interested in helping please contact Cathy Niswonger at clniswonger@yahoo.com

The next meeting of the MIC Committee will be held on Tuesday, July 8th. 

The Parma Rib-N-Rock had a successful run this year, Parma CERT assisted in setup and tear down, along with manning a booth passing out literature and talking to visitors.

Karen Gluntz displayed the placque that was presented to Parma CERT for their involvement in the Citywide drill held in March.  The placque will be displayed on the CERT Wall in the Smallwood Activity Center.

Special upcoming events will be the drill held by the Garfield Hts. CERT Team.  This will be a mass innoculation drill.  Parma CERT members are invited to attend and participate. Organizational Committee Meeting - April 16, 2008

In attendance: Captain Ed Sopko, Brian Riegel, Eugenia Bednar, Martin Jurcevic, Kathy Stiokis, Dave Ziel, David Lasley,  William Kesman, Cathy Niswonger, Kevin Niswonger, Deb Breska, Judi Habert, Joan Marando, Phil Thorne, Bonnie Isaacs, Nancy Yates and Dennis Gerlich. 

Financial - Eugenia Bednar

Genia went over the balance sheet, pointing out money remaining after current expenses being paid.    The paperwork has been submitted to the Attorney General's office for the grant.  The donation for the CERT Trailer, was approved by the Jacubic Post 572 of the American Legion.  The check should be forthcoming in May.  The balance on the fundraising from toner cartridges and cell phones stands now at $68.  It was decided to carry that balance at this time.   The forms for the State of Ohio have been completed, and Eugenia and William Kesman will work to complete.  When papers are filed with the IRS, it would be best to refile both, the Articles of Incorporation with the State of Ohio, and the Bylaws which have to be refiled with the IRS.  Dennis Gerlich is to draft the new Articles of Incorporation.

Communication - Dennis Gerlich

It was announced that the Jacubic Post 572 of the American Legion, was nominated and awarded and will be recognized by City Council and the Mayor on May 5th, 2008 at 7 P.M.  CERT Members are encouraged to attend.  Parma CERT is working for two games at Progressive Field this year, the first, will be Friday, May 9th versus Toronto Blue Jays with fireworks to follow.  Ticket prices for lower reserve will be $26, half of this will be donated back to Parma CERT.  Dennis went over the recent articles in the Parma Sun Post and Brecksville Gazette featuring Parma CERT.  Dennis re covered the possibility of finalizing the agreement for Parma CERT to become a shelter management partner with the American Red Cross.  A window hanger for automobiles is being developed and costs to be determined for Parma CERT members to use when deployed.  On Tuesday evening, copies of the Parma CERT Phonetree were emailed out to members to verify their information.  Once any needed information is corrected, the updated phonetree will be distributed.  Brian read off a letter from Mayor Dean DePiero, thanking Parma CERT for the involvement and professionalism during the recent citywide mass casualty drill at Parkview Elementary.

Recruiting - Karen Gluntz

Due to a scheduling conflict Karen was not able to attend the meeting.  Information is in place for the Safety Fair, including applications, schedules, brochures, etc. 

Training - Brian Riegel

Coming training sessions include the Safety Fair this Saturday, April 19th, where Parma CERT will host a first aid training class at the Parma Justice Center.  On April 26th, Fire Safety at 9 AM at the Senior Center, May 3rd, Terrorism and CERT and May 10th, CERT Training Review and final drill on Saturday, May 24th.   Brian also discussed that he is working on possibly setting up training for locations, such as Mt. Alverna, who would take classes on location, be available at their location, and would be part of the Parma CERT Team.  Another item addressed by both Brian and Captain Ed Sopko, is training for a Pandemic Flu/Mass Innoculation drill.

It was also noted that Mike Maistros will be stepping down from the position to assist with training.  William Kesman was nominated, seconded and voted into the position, and on to the Organizational Committee.

Eugenia reviewed the bank account balance Parma CERT has, and then reviewed grants Parma CERT has been working toward.  The grant from Target was not successful, the grant from Wal-Mart is still possible.  Paperwork will be submitted to the Ohio Attorney General's Office.  This grant would be used to purchase CERT Kits for new trainees, blankets, tarps and cost for parmacert.com.

Recruiting - Brian Riegel

Opportunities for recruiting, are the Safety Fair, coming up on Saturday, April 19th and the Fire Station Open Houses.  The current training class is at the half way mark.

Chamber of Commerce - Kathy Stiokis

The most recent luncheon for the Parma Chamber of Commerce was held at Parma Senior High School.  Information was given out regarding the recent school levies on the ballot.  The new Executive Director is to be announced.

Old Business

Cuyahoga County Citizen Corp Meeting was held at Garfield Civic Center.  Dennis Gerlich was nominated to be Vice Chair of the Citizen Corp Group.  Direct Contract was approved for Cuyahoga County to work directly with Parma CERT.  SubCommittee positions are still being filled for Training and Education, Public Outreach and Credentialing.

Discussion of the generator that is to be donated by Home Depot.  Dave Zeil to follow up and advise.

People are needed to work the Safety Fair on Saturday, April 19th at the Justice Center in Parma. 

The coming city-wide drill, to be held on Wednesday, March 26th, was discussed.  The discussion included the equipment that was needed, the duties and responsibilities of all teams and CERT members to participate in the drill.

Finance - Eugenia Bednar  

Genia reviewed the current checking account balance and information.  A motion was made and seconded to have Brian Riegel removed from the checking account and placing Dave Zeil in his place, the motion carried without opposition. Genia further discussed possble grants from Walmart, Target and the Ohio Attorney General's Office.  Genia further mentioned the importance of putting together a team for fundraising for an ongoing committee.  Anyone interested should contact Genia either by email at eugeniabednar@parmacert.com or by phone at (216) 554-1160

Communications - Dennis Gerlich 

Cox Communication will be at the Senior Center on Saturday, February 23rd, to videotape the Parma CERT class for CPR and AED.  CERT Members are asked to dress in their CERT T-shirts and arrive approximately fifteen minutes early.  The Phone tree for Parma CERT will be emailed out, members are asked to make any updates to their information by either emailing Dennis at dennisgerlich@parmacert.com or go to parmacert.com forms section and fill out the code red form.  This will be automatically forwarded to Dennis.  Cox Communications is showing "Lending a Hand" on channel 74.  This show contains information regarding Parma CERT and features members Dana Wood, Steve Skapura, Communications Chair Dennis Gerlich and Coordinator Brian Riegel.  It will air the remainder of the week from 8:30 A.M. to 9:00 A.M and 5:30 P.m to 6:00 P.M.  Thanks to both PACTV and Cox Communications for putting together this show. 

Recruiting

Due to personal reasons Shelley Cullins has to step down from the position of Recruting Chair, she will continue on as a member of CERT.  Anyone interested in the position of Recruiting Chairperson, should email Brian Riegel at brianriegel@parmacert.com  The new training classes continues, with twelve strong new members.  Recruiting will begin for July 2008 training class.  One such recruiting event, will be the Parma Safety Fair to be held on Satuday, April 19th, 2008 at the Parma Justice Center. 

Training - Brian Riegel   The January Training Classes continue on March 1st with Module IV Medical Operations Part II on Saturday 1st.  CPR / AED Training will conclude on Saturday, February 23rd from 1 P.M. until 4 P.M. 

Dave Zeil and David Lasley reviewed the coming drill to be held on Saturday, March 8th at the Parma Senior Center, to be held Jointly with members of the Ohio Military Reserve.  Currently there are fourteen people from Parma CERT signed up to participate, anyone wishing to sign up for the drill should contact Dennis Gerlich at dennisgerlich@parmacert.com.  

Brian Riegel reviewed the coming drill to be held on Wednesday, March 26th.  Brian went over the need for additional volunteers, the responsibilities of Parma CERT to be divided into three teams and the duties of those teams.  All CERT Team members who will participate are asked to first report to Parkview Elementary School and then will be disbursed to their locations.  Brian also reviewed the coming Safety Fair to be held at the Parma Justice Center on Saturday, April 19th. 

New Business 

A motion was made and seconded to draft a letter requesting the donation from the Jakubic American Legion Post 572 for the purchase of the trailer to be used by CERT for emergencies when activated and as a recruiting tool.  Dennis Gerlich will draft the letter to be signed by both Dennis and Eugenia Bednar. 

Five members have volunteered to be drivers when the trailer will need to be towed, they are:Terry Gill, Rich Lynn, Steve Skapura, Victor Younger and Dennis Gerlich. 

David Zeil is finalizing the details of a generator to be donated by Home Depot. 

Additional CERT bags that were recently ordered for the new training class, have arrived.  

The Forest Green Hooded Sweatshirts are in, and 35 of 41 sweatshirts have been paid for, and are available for pickup.  Contact Dennis Gerlich to arrange pickup, either by email at dennisgerlich@parmacert.com or by cell phone at 440 610-0597.

Organizational Committee Meeting -  January 23, 2008

Dave Zeil and Walter Scott opened the meeting with discussion of the planned drill that will occur on Saturday, March 8th, 2008.  The drill will take place in and around the area of the Parma Senior Center.  Some of the goals of the drill will be Administrative Accountability, Security and Radio usage.A follow up planning meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 6th for anyone wishing to assist in the planning of the drill.

Communications - Dennis Gerlich

One of Parma CERT's goals for 2008 was to obtain it's own phone for purpose of communications.  This goal has already been reached, the number for the Parma CERT phone is (440) 465-6559.  It was reported that parmacert.com has been updated so that CERT members can update their personal contact information, their Code Red Information and to sign up for any classes CERT offers.  This can be done by going to the Forms page of the website.  A suggestion  of putting in a link to connect to a printable application for CERT until the application can be filled out online.  Through cooperation with the Parma Senior Center, a wall in the room that CERT meets in, was designated to put Plaques and Proclamations CERT has earned.  Also, one of the panels of the front door area will contain information regarding Parma CERT with contact and meeting information.

Finance - Eugenia Bednar

  The year end financial report and the 2008 projected budget was reviewed, it was also noted that due to the goals set, fundraising goals will also have to be higher to accomplish them.  Some ideas mentioned for fundraising were multiple Indians games, fundraising dinners, joint fundraising with the Jakubic Post of the American Legion Post 572 and the annual November fundraiser.Tax forms for Parma CERT for the year ending 2007 are due May 1st, 2008.The final item under Finance had to do with the presentation of a $500 check from New York Life to Parma CERT by New York Life Manager and CERT member Walter Scott to Finance Chair Eugenia Bednar and Coordinator Brian Riegel.

Recruiting - Shelley Cullins

Fourteen people participated in the new training class that was held at the Senior Center on January 19th. 

Training - Brian Riegel

As mentioned above fourteen people participated in the new training class at the Center.CPR / AED classes will be offered during the month of February on all four Saturdays (2nd/9th/16th/23rd) from 1 P.M. to  P.M.  A First Aid class will be held at the Center during April 2008.  CERT Members Brian Riegel and Dennis Gerlich recently completed ICS 300 that was held at the Fire Training Academy on Lakeside Avenue in Cleveland.  It was also noted that members of the 2007 CERT Training Classes were honored with proclamations from State Representative Tim Degeeter,  members should contact Brian Riegel for their proclamation.

Chamber of Commerce - Kathy Stiokis

It was reported that the Chamber Luncheon is being held January 24th at the Sheraton Hotel at Hopkins Airport.  Guest Speaker to be Parma Community General Hospital CEO Pat Ruflin. 

Old Business

The major trauma kit was purchased for 495 plus shipping and handling.  This is a kit that will help take care of up to one hundred people.  This was purchased by the grant given by New York Life. 

New Business 

Goals for 2008 were outlined by members of the Organizational Committee.  They were as follows:

  • Fill January and July Training Classes with a minimum of ten people.
  • Develop a CERT Speakers Bureau to be used for Recruiting and Information
  • Offer CPR/AED Training and Business Continuity Emergency Planning
  • Continue coordination with Other CERTs for training and mutual cooperation
  • Obtain a telephone specifically for the use of Parma CERT
  • Develop parmacert.com to have all CERT forms, being able to fill them out online
  • Also include all training modules on parmacert.com 
  • Display all schedules and events regularly in and on media

Communications - Dennis Gerlich

CERT is working with PACTV, from the Parma City City Schools, who are putting together a video package for Parma CERT.  Interviews completed with Brian Riegel, Dana Wood, Steve Skapura and Dennis Gerlich for the package.  Information was passed to reporters for both the Parma Sun Post and The Gazette with information about the new training class, the CPR and AED Training classes and the recent graduates from the 2007 Training Classes, who were honored by Mayor DePiero, Parma City Council and the Fire Department at the December 17th Council Meeting.   It is hoped that the electronic application on the Parma CERT website will be functioning just at the start of the New Year.

Financial - Eugenia Bednar

Started off the meeting giving the Financial Report, the 2nd Annual fundraiser at Quotes made approximately $1,950. CERT is still awaiting workd on the status of the New York Life Grant.  This grant, if obtained will be used to purchase a major trauma first aid kit, with the capacity to care for 100 patients.  Recent checks that were issued were for payment of the cost for Parma CERT's website and a donation to the Parma Senior Center for coffee, creamer, etc.

Recruiting - Shelley Cullins

Shelley spoke to remind members that a new training class will begin on January 19th at the Parma Senior Center, and training for CPR and AED will be held on each Saturday during the month of February.

Logistics/Coordinator - Brian Riegel

Reiterated the new training class to begin on January 19th, the CPR/AED classes at the Senior Center in February. 

The Citizens Corp. Meeting will be held January 16th at North Royalton High School at 7PM, as it will be combined with Tap (Terrorism Awareness and Prevention) Training. 

WHK 1420 will present the Radio Program "Let Freedom Ring" on Sunday, December 23rd at 8PM. The CERT Program is to be prominently featured during the program.  March 8th, was selected to do a combined drill with the OHMR, 

Dave Zeil agreed to work with Walter Scott to assist in the planning of the drill.  The main focus of the drill will be on Communications, Accountability, Organization and Safety. 

Dave Zeil volunteered to do research on information with regard to a possible generator and Dennis Gerlich will do further research on an equipment trailer to be used by Parma CERT. 

Following the CERT Organization Meeting, CERT members in attendance welcomed Paula Young, from the Northeast Ohio Regional Fusion Center. The Northeast Ohio Regional Fusion Center provides strategic measures in Northeast Ohio.

The three main objectives of the Northeast Ohio Regional Fusion Center are Intelligence Analysis, Critical Infrastructure and Training. 

The Training covers three groups, the First Responders, Private Security and the General Public.  Some Partners of the NE Ohio Regional Fusion Center are the City of Cleveland Public Safety, Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, Justice Affairs, Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department and the Cuyahoga County Board of Health.

Recruiting - Shelley Cullins

Shelley began by discussing the guest for the Pandemic Flu presentations in December.  Discussion began on an electronic application.

Financial - Eugenia Bednar

Eugenia covered the fundraiser, discussing the people who would work, the positions that they would fill.  Discussion of the doorprizes, which were to be used for the raffles and which would be used for door prizes.

Eugenia also discussed the ongoing fundraising using cell phones and toner cartridges.

Communications - Dennis Gerlich

Discussed the updating of the CERT phone trees, it was decided to wait until after the coming training class.  Discussion of recent articles placed in the Parma Sun Post with regard to the fundraiser and the Pandemic Flu presentation.  It was also discussed to get announcements about the upcoming training Class in January, 2008 and the CPR / AED training classes to take place in February of 2008.

Training - Brian Riegel

The upcoming class in January is taking shape, with between 7 and ten trainees.   Paula Young of the Northeast Ohio Fusion Center will be a guest speaker at Parma CERT's December, 2008 Organizational Committee Meeting.  CPR / AED classes will be held at the Parma Senior Center, the four Saturdays in February, 2008.

Organizational Committee Meeting Notes - September , 2007

Communications - Dennis Gerlich

Opened the meeting with information about the joint work done with the American Red Cross Cuyahoga County Emergency Management and Parma CERT on Seprember 6th.  This was a demonstrationi of safety forces, including Parma Fire, Parma Police, Parma SWAT, Bomb squad and K-9 Units from the Cuyahoga County Sheriffs department and Seven Hills Police Department. 

The webpage, parmacert.com continues to evolve and will continue to grow with the hope of being the predominant CERT webpage, for information.

Financial - Eugenia Bednar

Genia updated the progress on the sale of Indian's Tickets for the coming game versus the Oakland Athletics.

The fundraiser in November, again will be held at Quotes on Ridge Road in Parma, she stressed the need for more donations.  She also reviewed the continuing fundraiser effort with toner cartridges and cell phones.

Five people are set to begin training for the class that will begin in Mid January, 2008.

Drill for the current training class is to be held on Saturday, October 27th.  While this will be their final drill, it is open to all members of Parma CERT to participate if they desire.

There is nothing new to report as the Parma Chamber is closed for new activities.

New Business

Brian Riegel and Dennis Gerlich will visit the Jacubic Post 572 of the American Legion, to deliver information on National Emergency Preparedness month, at the general meeting of the Post.

A Parma CERT wish list was discussed with immediate thoughts of an equipment trailer, a GPS unit and stretchers to be used during an emergency.

-Camp Perry Exercise- 10/11/07 had to do with Red Cross training on damage assessment, we are inquiring on possible training thru the American Red Cross, also a possible field exercise with the Ohio Military Reserve.  Would have to do with Search and Rescue, Triage and operating a command post.

County Citizens Corp meeting held at North Royalton  on September 12th.  This took place in three parts.  The County meeting where discussion of cDr redentialing and training lead the way.The second part was a meeting for the North Royalton CERT group followed by the presentation put on by Regional Transit Authority discussing it's security program for buses due to attacks in Europe.  Dr. John King, an analyst for the FBI, discussed areas for possible attacks, such as malls, schools, etc;  Goals of the FBI are conterterrorism, counter intelligence. cyber security and organized crime.  The biggest threat are sleeper cells, this is groups of people who follow an ideology.  The FBI offers a citizens academy which is an eight week training program.

Shelley Cullins is to inquire with the US Marshals office for additional training. 

Brian Riegel attended the tour of the Emergency Center in Cleveland.  It has seating assigned for all emergency personnel; electric power, though has diesel capabilities; funded through homeland security, from children’s games in 2002; contains sleeping, eating and shower arrangements at the location.  Mostly Fire and EMT personnel with some Police;

Shelley Cullins was confirmed as the new Recruiting Chairperson for Parma CERT.

Organizational Committee Meeting - July 19, 2007

In attendance: Brian Riegel, Captain Ed Sopko, Eugenia Bednar, Dennis Gerlich, Kathy Stiokis, David Ziel, Mike Maistros, Tim and Judi Habert;

The meeting started at 6:35 with opening remarks by Brian Riegel.

Communications - Dennis Gerlich
Discussed the ability of putting information out over various vehicles such as the City Hall Message Board, Cox Channel 45 the link with the City Hall Website and our own website, parmacert.com.

Also, CERT recently appeared before the Safety Committee to discuss further involvement by CERT within the City's nine wards and appearing at Ward meetings.

Financial - Eugenia Bednar
The current financial document was discussed, along with the cell phone and toner donation programs.  The November fundraiser was discussed and agreed upon for Sunday, November 18th, at Quotes Bar on Ridge Road.  The Cleveland Browns play the Baltimore Ravens.  Also, the Financial committee is formulating plans for a chili cookoff for sometime in February, with hopeful participation from the fire department, city council among others.

Training - Mike Maistros
The Terrorism Early Warning class has been set for August 17th and 18th.  This is an eight hour class, that will be held at the Parma Senior Center.  It will be open to CERT members, Police and Fire Department members.  Please respond by using the registration form that has been emailed.

Recruiting - Brian Riegel
Need to start thinking of the next recruiting class; September is National Emergency Preparedness month, and the need to develop our speakers bureau.  Also the development of speaking to businesses within Parma, about a Business Continuity Plan.

Chamber of Commerce - Kathy Stiokis
The Chamber is on summer break from meetings, but Kathy has spoken to Cheryl McIntosh regarding making a presentation at one of their luncheons.

New Business
It was discussed thirteen members have had no activity since November, 2006.  Organizational committee members Kathy Stiokis, Dave Ziel and Dennis Gerlich volunteered to make contact to determine status of these members.

In regard to the $450 allotment in a grant from Cuyahoga County, it was moved, seconded and passes that Parma CERT purchase Water Proof Field Training Guides for members with the money.

Based on a recent email sent out, it was determined that the outing at Jacobs Field will be held on Friday, September 21st.  It was approved to purchase up to fifty tickets.  Dennis Gerlich is to finalize details.

Discussion of business cards for members of the Organizational Committee, follow up to be done with Meghann McCall, to determine if these can be printed by the City.

It was also decided to purchase a copy of the Book, Preparing for the Worst: A Comprehensive Guide to Protecting your Family from Terrorist Attacks by James Schaefer Jones.

Advised that the Code Red System information was updated with Linda Weiman of the City of Parma COM Center,  The phone tree, which is the backup to the Code Red system has also been redeveloped, and each ward has an appointed ward captain.

The website, parmacert.com (welcome to it) was unveiled and will be functioning by this weekend(6/9/07), some areas will need to be further developed.

Financial - Eugenia Bednar

Gave an update of our bank account.  Additional money will be deposited from the grant received from Parma General Hospital for new CPR masks.  A check was issued for Chamber of Commerce dues. Fundraisers were discussed with the annual fundraiser to be held in November 2007 at Quotes Bar, with a reverse raffle.

Recruiting - Victor Younger

Brian stepped in for Victor who had a prior commitment. Brian advised that Victor had represented CERT at the Community Fair held at the Parma Senior Center this past week.The new training class will begin in July, has sixty people interested.

A New Training class will begin on Tuesday, July 10th.

Terrorism Early Warning - Mike Maistros

Chamber of Commerce - Kathy Stiokis

Attended the recent luncheon held at Cuyahoga Community College in Parma, the Chamber presented five scholarships to area high school graduates.  Brian mentioned about an article in Inside Business magazine regarding training in Emergency Planning for businesses.  Kathy will inquire with the Chamber to see if there is interest for CERT to make a presentation.

Other Notes:

Motion was passed to add Mike Maistros, Kathy Stiokis and Dave Ziel to the Organizational Committee.  Mike Maistros will assist in some training areas beginning with the Terrorism Early Warning training, Kathy will be the liaison with the Chamber of Commerce and Dave Zeil will assist with recruiting.
